Losing Roberta

Losing a student..

-----------------------------------------

Roberta closes the door behind you. Her face is very pale and her eyes red.
"hi."

You say, "Hey, hon. I got your message on my machine."

Roberta nods. "Thank you for comming. Would you care for a drink?"

You say, "No thanks. What's on your mind?"

Roberta says, "Yesterday, you made a statement. That I'd have to make a
choice between your teaching and my relationship with Marie-Anne, dispite
that you know nothing of her except the little I said, certanly not enough
to know her as a good person or not. You also walked out on me, leaving me
without help. I very much would like to know your reasons for these
things.""

Melody leans forward. "Roberta, if you're starting to get Sight, and
starting to really learn magick, you leave yourself vulnerable. To a lot."

Roberta nods once. "So I should end all my relationships, whomsoever they
may be with? Incase they are a threat?"

You say, "Listen to this from a teacher's point of view, OK? Just a
second?"

Roberta nods. "I'm listening."

You say, "The first time you see this white rabbit critter, you're with
her, and she pulls a knife and chases it. How do I know she's not giving
you acid? Or worse?"
You say, "Flashbacks happen, you know."

Roberta says, "Has you stopped and listened to the second incident, it
would have been clear that it wasn't a flashback. It was visable to other
people as i percieved it. But your reaction was to her, not the incident
itself, wasn't it?"

Melody sighs. "I have a bad feeling about her, Roberta. You're welcome to
be involved with her, but I think it's a bad idea. Everything you told me
about her, which admittedly wasn't much, had my hair on end."

Roberta says, "And is your teaching still conditional on my leaving her?"

You say, "As of now, yes. I'm sorry if that bothers you, and if you duck
out I'll understand. But I didn't get where I am by ignoring my
intuition."

Roberta says, "There's a passage in one of the books I work from. Someone
on their first vision. Two golden entities approched him, and told him
that he'd have to give up friendship and love for power. He declaimed
'Begone, things of evil', and they were forced away and left. When he was
asked how he knew they were evil, he said 'Only evil would try to take
away love.'" She looks down, swallows, then looks at you directly. "I can
no longer accept your teaching, because of this. When someone makes you
choose between people, it is that someone who is always in the wrong. Oh,
and my relationship to Marie-Anne ended over a month ago, by the way.""

Melody nods, calm. "Starhawk. _Dreaming the Dark_, I believe. That was on
the astral, by the way. I'm not making you choose between people. What I'm
doing is following my own instincts and setting standards for who I will
teach."

Roberta says, "I doubt it was that book but yes. And you did make me
choose, between your teaching and my relationship with someone else."

You say, "You don't understand the process of Will yet."

Roberta shakes her head. "No I don't. I do understand, though, what I do
and don't find acceptable as a teacher of my faith. That they follow it."

Melody chuckles softly. "I think you were under a misapprehension, then. I
follow my faith. My faith is not white light and fluffy bunnies. It's real
earth magick. It IS demanding. It IS hard. The Goddess does not demand
sacrifice, but she does say that what you seek is within and not without.
And in order to do that, you have to mkae the harder choice sometimes.
Melody rises. "So. Was that all you had to say?"

Roberta says, "the things you lent to me or in that bag there."

Melody nods and takes the bag.
